Burma is a newcomer to the regional tourist industry. However, the government have quickly understood the importance of this sector since it is increasingly contributing a great part into the economic development of the country. Thus, transport infrastructure is among the most important priority of the Burmese government.

Air transport in burma in particular is undergoing unprecedented development in the country. It is now fairly easy to come, to leave and to fly to Burma. To prepare your holidays in Burma, follow the guide!

General information on air transport in Burma

To enter the Burmese territory by air, you will need your passport (valid for six months after leaving the country) and a visa for your flights to Myanmar. Regarding your visa, you can consult our dedicated page for all formalities.

Burma has three international airports, namely Yangon (RGN), Mandalay (MDL) and Naypyidaw (NYT). If you wish to take domestic flights, there are airports in Bagan (NYU), Heho / Inle Lake (HEH), Kengtung (KET), Lashio (LSH), Sittwe (AKY) and Tachileik (THL).

The national airline is Myanmar Airways International, but the country has more than a dozen registered airlines. Problems related to air transport in Burma do not concern safety or service but it is rather the general arrangement which is sometimes hazardous. Indeed, because most airlines companies are small, they are trying to save money. Thus, if the flights do not reach a certain number of booked seats, then there is a high possibility that they are canceled, even a few hours of the departure. Or, you may find yourself stopping unexpectedly en route. This will require you to be very careful when planning stops and flight connections.

With regard to airlines policy, keep your tickets carefully. If you lose your ticket, you will have to buy another. You will also be asked to reconfirm your flights to Burma 24 hours in advance.

Buy your airline ticket to and from Burma

When preparing for your Myanmar trip, it is much more preferable to make direct purchase at airline sites such as Air France. For domestic flights, you should go to a travel agency or an office of one of the national airlines. You will usually get promotions from travel agencies. These tickets are generally cheaper than those of other airlines.

Prices generally range between 40 and 200USD depending on the trip and the time of year. A one-way ticket costs half a round trip and you can book between 6 months and 24 hours in advance.

There is no tax on domestic flights. However, when leaving Burma, you will be asked to pay a departure tax of 10USD; it is not included in the price of your ticket. Prepare the 10USD bank note, kyats are not accepted.

During your tour in Burma, you can fly to the main tourist places of the country. It takes about 10 hours to fly to Burma from France.
